Rush University Student ID
My Family’s Chicago Story By Meyer Thorp
I found my mom's student ID card for Rush University from 2002. Mom kept it as a reminder of her first years in Chicago with my dad. My family’s migration to Chicago starts off with my mom and dad getting married in Philadelphia on June 7, 2002. Two months later, my dad and mom moved to Chicago so my mom could go to graduate school at Rush University and study anatomy. It was a two day drive and finally they arrived in Chicago with Jeter, the cat. They moved into an apartment on Columbus Drive in the downtown area of Chicago and they did not know anybody. My parents were far from home, none of their family members were around for miles and they were starting a brand new life. They both worked hard, made friends, and finally mom finished school. Ten years later they decided to have a baby which was me. They moved to a larger apartment in the neighborhood of Wicker Park. I was born in 2012 and my brothers were born three years later in 2015. The student ID tag is important because it explains the reason why my parents migrated to Chicago and why my brothers and I are Chicagoan's. It is also important to her and my family because it’s a reminder of the beginning of our life.
