My dad had to drop out of school at 14 to support the family, and that night enrolled in the New School of Social Research--went to night school until the Depression shut the factory and he became a traveling salesman, unloading unsold diamonds. Eventually he ran a jewelry store on Orchard Street and became the president of the Jewelers Association, and presented this gift of a diamond to Marilyn Monroe after the release of Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend.
