Urohs en Pohnpei

The artifact that I chose is a skirt from my mother’s birthplace called Pohnpei, Micronesia. Micronesia isn’t a very known place. It’s made up of small tropical islands which are part of Oceania. There are four islands that make up Micronesia, Yap, Korsrae, Pohnpei, and Chuuk. My mother is from Pohnpei. She came to America in 2002 because her father sent her to work and provide for her family. My mother has told me many stories about her birth place, and how she would like to go back one day. She told me about these skirts, Urohs en Pohnpei, which are commonly worn back home. This unique embroidery is never seen anywhere else, so if you see anyone wearing this, you could ask if they’re from Pohnpei. My mother takes extreme pride in where she’s from, she truly loves her birth place, and whenever she would talk about it, her eyes are always full of love. I wish that I could help bring her back to Micronesia, I’ve seen first hand how much she loves and misses it there, and her dream is to bring her daughters there, it’s expensive but I'll try my best.

Place(s): Pohnpei, Micronesia
