Marathi Shrikhand

Shrikhand is a sweet yogurt pudding native to western India. It is a very old dish as it dates back to 400 BC. It's traditionally made with yogurt, cardamom, saffron, and sugar and is served as a dessert in many big events like weddings. This dish is important to my family because we eat it before every big event or change in our lives (i.e. the first day of middle school). Before we leave the house, we need to eat at least 1 spoon of it. Shrikhand is used in all parts of India and is very important to each culture. It is used in many diverse ways across the country. For example, in northwest India (Where my mom is from) shrikhand is a side dish for a salty bread. But in other places like central India (Where my dad is from), it's a dessert that is often given after spicy dishes. This is also the dish that my parents ate before they came to the United States from India. Overall, shrikhand is a really important dish in my family and culture.
