Corpus sweets

In June Cuenca has a curious mix between religion, culture, gastronomic, and popular arts holiday, called Corpus Christi, where the tourist and native  people can buy, eat a lot of sweets, while they are enjoying the popular music, dances, fireworks and different events around the Calderon Central Park. Among the sweets you can find several colors and tastes of biscuits, candies, gummies, delicious and artisanal cookies, coconut rounds, artisanal lollipops, donuts, cinnamon rolls, milk topping, guava jam, alfeniques, meringue dessert, nougats and more. My favorite is sweet quesadilla. It’s a mix of cheese, cornstarch, cornmeal and powdered sugar.

Corpus Holiday is celebrated in the first week of June, when those sweets are prepared by hand made for cuencanas families before and during that holiday. When I was child I waited for this sweet holiday with a lot of anxiety. I loved going to that place, I didn’t know the tradition, I always went to buy sweets. Later, when I had my children, we used to enjoy going every day of Corpus week to buy sweets, even twice a day, because we lived near Calderon Central Park. Now my children send me my favorite Corpus sweets in June. I feel excited when I eat one. I remember my childhood, my family, my city and my sweet tradition.  Now my children send me my favorite Corpus sweets in June. I feel excited when I eat one.
