Im/migrant who arrived as a child
In my culture we have a tradition of eating a soup called soup joumou on the first day of the year. My mother and grandmother love cooking this food together and they have been doing it for years even before I was even born. The reason Haitians eat this soup is to celebrate independence from the shackles of slavery and their liberation from French rule. I find it comforting to watch my mother and grandmother cook with some great Haitian music in the background while I sit on the couch and draw or play video games.
