A wedding Dirca is handmade.

This object is called a Dirca, also known as a Somali Dirca or wedding Dirca. A Dirca is made from sheer, lightweight fabric and is often detailed with threads, beadwork, and sequins. This object is used during weddings, Eid, or other special occasions. The Dirca originated in Somalia and has spread to countries like the United States and the Middle East through migration. I started learning about this object when I saw women in my family like my mom and sisters wearing the dirca. The Dirca shows that I am connected to my Somali culture and traditions, even while living in a different country. Wearing or seeing the Dirca makes me feel proud, confident, and connected to my family. The Dirca is important to me because it represents heritage, celebration, and family unity. I think people need to understand that the Dirca is more than clothing, it represents culture, identity, celebration, especially during important life events like weddings. The Dirca teaches us the importance of keeping traditions alive and staying connected to where we are from. Something the Dirca teaches us about the American experience is that it includes many cultures, where families bring traditions from their home countries and keep them alive in a new place. My family's story is similar to other immigrant stories because it involves migration and cultural preservation, but it is different because it reflects Somali traditions like wearing the Dirca.
