When my grandpa left China he brought almost nothing. He arrived with a few hundred dollars and one idea in his head: buy property. He spent most of his life here working at the bar he managed and then owning his own bar the rest of his life. My object for this story was the rice cooker my mom uses now, and I was curious if my grandpa had ever used one like it. My mom said that he cooked rice every day using several different rice cookers he owned, and taught her how to cook many different and unique Chinese dishes. Most of what he passed down was land here in the Bay Area, and that’s helped my family for my entire life, because of his determination and struggle to achieve his version of the American Dream. Rice specifically has become a huge part of my culture at home because of his immigration from China, and therefore bringing his traditions and culture into my life, which is why I chose the rice cooker as my image.
