You may have seen people wearing a red string bracelet. It is not worn for style but for cultural purposes. The red string bracelet is a Buddhist tradition, it is tied onto one's wrist to absorb all negative energy. In my culture, we wear a red string bracelet for it to absorb negative energy until it has held enough, it falls off. My mom has always said it brings bad luck if you cut it off on your own. Red thread is used because it represents protection, faith, and good luck. This bracelet is normally given on a certain event. For example, on my sweet sixteenth birthday, lots of bracelets were tied onto my wrists by all members of my family. It is usually given out at temples too. The amount of bracelets can vary depending on the occasion. My parents came from Cambodia together to the U.S. to live a new life after getting married. Even after they immigrated to the states, their traditions have never changed or have been forgotten about.
