Playbills
Growing up as a New Yorker, theatre has been an important aspect of my life and my whole family's. My mom took all of my siblings and me to our first Broadway show in 2009, which was Mary Poppins. While I don't remember the show because I was so young, I believe it played such an important role in my upbringing. Both of my parents loved and participated in theatre their whole lives, which is why they passed on this fun tradition of seeing shows together. My family is full of generations of New Yorkers as both of my parents were born here and so were their parents. My cultural ties to my ancestors from Germany and Ireland have been lost through all of these generations. Therefore, I most identify with my cultural identity as a New Yorker and American. And as a New Yorker, the theatre industry is so important to us, especially in my family. It is a shared opportunity for us to see shows and keep memories of our experiences at the performances. Going to the theatre with my family as a child and as an adult now is something I'll always cherish. It's something that I believe plays a huge role in being a New Yorker and is something I will pass down to my future generations. While this object isn't tied to my family's immigration, it's something that plays a huge role in my cultural identity.
