My Great Grandma’s is a child of Norwegian and German immigrants who came through Ellis Island. Her parents came over when they were young, her dad came over from Norway when he was twelve and her mom came over from Germany when she was little. They both settled in Redwood Falls, Minnesota when they came over to America. When my Great Grandma was a child her mom, grandmother, and relatives still spoke in German to one another, eventually her, her cousins, and siblings picked up on what they were saying in German, once her parents and relatives picked up that they could understand they switched to a higher dialect of German so they couldn’t understand them. My Great Grandma’s parents did not want her to learn their language since they were now here in America, and they wanted a new and better start for her. My Great Grandma still grew up with having Norwegian and German food and culture, one of her favorite desserts is Kringla a Norwegian dessert traditionally paired with coffee. Me and my cousin have learned how to make kringla and when we make it, we make sure to give some to our Great Grandma. My Great Grandma has since been back to Norway with her brothers and sisters to visit relatives. Her relatives have also come to Minnesota before as well. When my mom was little, her family along with my great grandparents took trips up to Minnesota to visit relatives and family still in Minnesota and the ones visiting Minnesota. Today my Great Grandma and her sister are the only ones still alive out of the family.
