Percheron Horses
Harry Good Eshelman, my great great great grandfather, was born in 1884 in Illinois and grew up in Kansas. He was a famous horse breeder, and bred Percheron horses. Percherons look like Clydesdales and are very strong and valued horses. He sold most of his horses at the end of the Great Depression, so he did not gain as much money as he could have. It is recorded that at one of his major sales 2,000 people from all over the country came to buy his respected Percherons. One of his most prized horse, Carino’s Bonnie, was sold for $1,000, which was a lot of money for the early 1900s; for example, a car was sold for as little as $400. He also instituted a new way to transport horses. Harry Eshelman wanted the best for his horses, so he paid the railroad to allow his horses to be transported across the country in train cars; as he started transporting his horses by train, many breeders followed.
