Making the masa with green bananas.

Food is a very important part of my culture.  Being Puerto Rican, I learn lots of tasty recipes from my mom all the time.  She is the best cook I know and makes the best Spanish dishes. The most unique Puerto Rican dish is Pasteles.  Pasteles have pork pieces in the center, which is surrounded by different vegetable masa wrapped in banana leaves, and boiled.  Making this dish is a time when the entire family comes together and helps out.  We use a machine that turns the vegetables to mush and gives it a unique texture.  My family has been making Pasteles for as long as we can remember.  My family has brought this tradition to the states straight from the island.  Since I have never been there, making these dishes, and celebrating my culture in different ways helps me feel connected to the island and its culture.
