When I was given a cultural assignment, I thought in my head, “What would be a good object to show that is part of my country or culture?” I decided to write about Empanadas. Empanadas are a type of food that is part of Dominican and Puerto Rican culture. Empanadas are made of dough made of corn flour. The filling inside the empanadas can have cheese, sugar, meat, fruits and vegetables.
I chose this significant artifact because my family makes Empanadas on every single holiday we celebrate, including Christmas. The thing that Empanadas taught me about my culture is that it is made in Columbia.
One question I would like to ask my ancestors, or whoever made the first Empanada, is “Why is this type of food so well loved by all in my country?”
On my father’s side of the family we usually go to my aunt’s, Yaqueline, house in Queens, on most holidays we celebrate. We mostly eat Empanadas for New Year’s at her place. We eat empanadas with a bit of white rice with chopped onions. After reading this, and if you still haven’t tried empanadas yet, what are you waiting for? Go out and get some! Enjoy the delicious empanadas. They are so Good…!
