My family artifact is a ring from my Grandma Phyllis, it is her wedding ring. Grandma was born in 1929 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her parents were named Mildred and Ralph, and Ralph worked for a gas company. They were very religious, and she was raised Catholic. Grandpa Bob was born in 1920 to parents named Mary and Kenneth. Kenneth worked in the used car repair business, and Grandpa Bob worked with his father in the family business. He was in the navy and when he got out, he proposed to Grandma Phyllis with the ring, however there were several issues with their wedding. To start off, Grandpa was not Catholic, but Grandma and her mother, Mildred, were very religious and wanted her to be married in a church. Legally, a person could not be married in a Catholic church unless they were Catholic, however Grandma insisted that she have a traditional Catholic wedding. Grandpa was Baptist, so they could not have their traditional wedding in a Catholic church. The priest agreed to marry them traditionally, but under the condition that it would have to happen in the priest’s house, not in the church. The priest didn’t want to do it at all since he thought it wasn’t right, but Grandpa Bob was very persistent. So, the wedding happened in the priest’s house. Although, it was the middle of winter and the heater unexpectedly broke in the house, so everyone was quite cold.
