My family sabbath candlestick

The sabbath candlestick

My great grandma’s parents immigrated from Ukraine in around 1911 or 1912, and when they came they brought with them a candlestick given to them by their mother. This candlestick was used for friday night sabbath services which are led by women and usually were done at home. This candlestick has been passed down in the female line for generations and it has passed on to my mom. This artifact connects me to my jewish heritage even though my family is currently christian. It is still important to learn about the culture you came from even if you practice a different one. My great great grandma who my great grandma got the candlestick from was named Rebecca P and was born around 1820 and died around 1926 and this means the candle is at least 150 years old. On the bottom of the candle there is a piece of paper saying Rebecca’s name and some words “gentle loving valiant" .I think those words can really guide our family through hard times. The candlestick is no longer used for friday night sabbath services but is more a remnant of my family's heritage. The candlestick is about a foot tall, made of a tarnished golden metal, and it is pretty simple in general design, just a wider disk shape at the bottom that goes into the “stick” part and then a little hollow at the top for the candle.
