The Store

My second great grandfather, or as everyone in my family calls him, Papa Ben, came from a city called Bialystok, Poland. The city is known for the invention of the bialy, a kind of bagel with caramelized onions in the middle. It is also known for Ludwik Zamenhof, the inventor of the language Esperanto. He immigrated to the U.S a long time ago. He then moved to Iowa City later where he met my nanny, Pearl. They got married and he opened up a grocery store called, Ben Whitebook Grocers. There my great grandma and her sister grew up. He owned the store until my great great grandma died in 1976. After that he moved to Kansas to live with my grandpa and his family in Topeka until he died in 1977. I chose this because it is something that comes up a lot because anyone who met him really loved him. This store started during the Depression and continued to thrive well into the 1970s.
