I'm a Cuban-American born and raised in Miami, moved to Brooklyn in the winter of 2023 looking for work opportunities. I do not have very much when it comes to physical articles or family antiques, the majority of our stuff from Cuba was left behind when my family fled the Revolution. I've attached my grandaunt's gold ring she was able to bring with her as well as her degree in Science that she got, where she was able to practice pharmacology. My grandfather (grandaunt's brother) had moved to the US to join the Army in an effort to emigrate my grandmother out of Cuba before the Revolution sprung, and my grandmother was part of the bourgeois class in rural Villa Clara along with her three sisters. They gave up their material wealth and sold what they had in order to pay for safe passage into Miami, and my grandmother took her two sons (my uncles) with her on a long distance car trip to Tulsa, OK where my grandfather was stationed. She didn't know how to drive, and had to learn along the way. She was also pregnant with my mother during this trip, and gave birth to her shortly after arriving.
My father's side's story is somewhat similar. He came through the Freedom Flights via his half-sister in Miami and claimed my father and his parents in 1967 at the age of 6. They also left everything behind and have little of anything from their time in Cuba.
