- Hello, my name is Sabiqunahar Begam, please call me Sabi. One of the most important items my grandmothers (paternal and maternal) brought to the US were gold bangles. The gold bangles are an important item because in my culture (I am Bengali-American), married women wear these as a sign of their marriage status, and they don’t take it off unless it’s to replace it with another pair of gold bangles. Gold bangles are also passed down from grandmother, mother, daughter, etc. I notice that now-a-days not many women always keep gold bangles on, it could be different in Bangladesh, I am just making my observation from my family in the US. When I was younger, I noticed that a lot of older Bengali women would always wear gold bangles or gold jewelry. In the picture above, my mom bought these new bangles for my grandmother (her mom) from Bangladesh. My grandmother used to wear simpler and thinner gold bangles.
