Glass Plate
My Great Grandmother immigrated from Sicily, Italy when she was a young girl. When she married my great-grandpa, our ancestors from Sicily sent this plate as a wedding gift. The plate is made of porcelain and is carved with olive trees on the outer rim. The plate was hand-painted and is a part of our family history. It is heavy and smooth, and when I carry it I feel as if I am connecting to my ancestors. On the back of the plate my great grandmother's new last name, Zeno, is written on it, along with the country, Italy. This plate was given to my grandmother from her mother on the day of her wedding as a present, and she carried on the tradition when she passed it to my mom on her wedding day. This plate is passed down in our family as a present on wedding days as a reminder of our family and our Italian ancestors.
