Drinking coffee after dinner and eating delectable chocolate from La Ibérica, our local chocolate factory, are some of my favorite memories from living in Arequipa, Peru. My husband, Miguel, is from Arequipa, and he and I met there while I was working in Peru. His family generously invited us over for dinner several times a week during our first year of marriage. We always lingered afterwards to catch up with each other while sipping on hot coffee or tea. It was not unusual for someone to pull out their "secret stash" of high-quality chocolate and share a piece with everyone while we chatted.
When Miguel and I moved to the United States in 2003 many things in our lives changed, but we also held on to some traditions that remind us of family in Peru. Life is busy, but Miguel and I still make the effort to share coffee after dinner and learn about each other's day. And each year, on Christmas and Easter, every member of our family receives their own bag of chocolate, that Miguel has meticulously gathered over a period of several weeks during his shopping expeditions for only the very best chocolates that our city has to offer.
