I grew up in a hardworking low middle class family. We always built our way up by hardwork and determination. My object is a small 18 karat gold necklace with a Buddha. The necklace has always been with me. The origin of my necklace was meant for their second child being born, which was me. They hoped their child would be a boy. I’ve worn the necklace until I was 13 years old. I held onto it as a treasured item. It represents my cultural identity because it shows that patience and hard work will lead you to success. This contributes to my family because my family fled from the Khmer Rouge to start life again in America.  They faced the challenges from not knowing english with struggling here in other ways. As years went by things got a lot better for them my parents learned english and they got a decent paying job that would provide the necessities needed to survive. Now, we have the necessities needed to survive. My family story is different because of how they got here and the struggles they faced. Most families can’t overcome the challenges of what it takes to achieve their dreams. Our story connects with others because it is the same of theme of immigration and hard work but, it shows that we made here to survive and live our dreams.
