Bracelet from the Philippines
I watched Reyna Grande's video about a dress her grandmother made for her when she was a little girl.
My object is a bright red bracelet with a golden charm engraved with characters meaning wealth and prosperity. My grandmother got it for me in the Philippines when I was very little, and ever since then, I've kept it on display in my bedroom. My grandparents immigrated to the United States shortly before my mother was born, and the minute she came into this world, she was as American as could be. As she grew up, our connections to the Philippines slowly began to fade. But my grandmother was determined to never let us forget. She went to the Philippines every year, bringing back gifts and toys for my cousins and me, and when I finally got the opportunity to travel to her hometown when I was eleven, she made sure I ate as many traditional foods and saw as many sites important to our family as possible. This bracelet represents so much about me: not only my culture, but my family too. I sincerely hope that one day, when I have grandchildren of my own, I can pass down stories and objects from the Philippines, just the way my own grandmother did with me.
