A SMALL BLUE BOX
A SMALL BLUE BOX

I received this gift at the age of 10. It's a transparent, blue and small box. The material is probably plastic. I got it in 2018 and had no idea what to do with it. Since it was November of 2018, we were visiting my home country Bangladesh. I decided that I’d take the box with me. When I arrived, my big family welcomed me with many gifts and warm hugs. I received gold earrings, bracelets, hand-me-downs, hairclips and more. Since then, it's been such a long time since I visited my big family after coming back to America. So these past few years they have been mailing me so many gifts from Bangladesh. This artifact is so important to me because I’m not a very fancy person. I don't wear many accessories, but I cherish every gift given to me. My memories with my family are all in this box. Even if I had nothing to do with those gifts, there's very ancient accessories inside this box, even cute hairclips from my relatives. Sometimes I wonder: what should I do with these? Or who shall I give these to? “We the people” connected to my box because it shows America is made up of many different people. Families, cultures and my jewelry is one small example of the diversity. It shows how the government can affect people's lives, especially when families have connections over two different countries. To me, the box represents how my personal story and Bengali family culture are a larger part of the community that makes up the U.S.
