Word of mouth traditions
My family has lived within the United States for multiple generations. Like many other African American families, my ancestors were slaves that were brought to America against their will and have created multiple generations that have never had access to a family heirloom as a result. My family in particular did not pass down anything tangible for future generations to look back on, but instead we passed down things through word of mouth, hairstyles, recipes, and even faith in some cases. Recipes like soul food have been passed down through generations, as it is something that was able to be kept through knowledge and utilized with the available ingredients within the American south before the great migration. After the great migration, many of these recipes were Brought up north and passed down through many generations until it finally my generation, Similarly with hairstyles as they were almost like heirlooms of my ancestor's lives, that we still utilize to this very day. Faith is something that has also been passed down through generations, but unlike recipes or hairstyles, faith has seemingly began to diminish throughout generations, as many of my older family members are extremely religious, while many of the younger family members, such as myself, were not raised in a religious environment, and have seemingly become more agnostic, or even in some cases atheistic.
