Ukrainian Flag
By Mark Dotsenko
Usually, I go Ukraine every summer but because of the coronavirus, I didn’t get to go in 2020. The Ukrainian flag I have in my house serves as a reminder to me of what it’s like to be there. The colors blue and yellow are meant to symbolize water and land meeting and the symbol on the top is meant to signify freedom and liberty. The flag is meant to stand in the middle of any place that it is in. I miss going to Ukraine.
My parents found the flag at a large meetup in Ukraine and brought it to New York when they moved here in 2005. The flag is special to me because it serves as something that reminds my family and me of how we came here from Ukraine. We don’t use it because it really is just a good luck charm more than anything so we put it in the main room and let it stay there.
I would like to ask my parents why they brought the flag here.
