This is a "Tray of Togetherness", or a 攢盒. These are typically brought out for Chinese New Year, and all the food in it represent different things. For example, the lotus root in the center represents family ties staying strong in the new year. My parents immigrated here to get away from the Cultural Revolution, where items such as these were destroyed for being four olds, and they were really happy to have something like this with them in America. The Tray of Togetherness seemed to work, at any rate - in about five years, the family was together again.
