travel chest
This travel chest has been passed down through generations of my maternal grandfather's family. It currently resides at my mother's house. Both sides of my grandfather's lineage originates from Prussia or modern northwestern Germany. This chest was brought from Prussia to the USA during their migration. They were processed in Baltimore, Maryland and then moved to Iowa to be near other German-speaking immigrants and to farm.
My maternal great-great grandfather worked as an insurance broker in Iowa and it is clear that he worked with other Prussian immigrants. I have newspaper clippings of his company advertising their services, but the advertisements are written in German. We wish our family knew more about the stories behind this chest or its contents but today it holds blankets made by my family members.
