Traditional Scottish Kilt
My object is a traditional Scottish Tartan. It was given to my mom by her mother-in-law on her wedding day. My Grandmother’s parents were from Scotland. My grandparents on my father’s side pride themselves on their Scottish heritage to a comical point. The clan that we were apart of is Clan Murray. They were one of the more peaceful clans; we only had two rivals: Clan Drummond and Hannay. There are two branches of our clan: Tullibardine, and Atholl. This outfit was given to my parents by my paternal grandmother. The outfit is a kilt, a hat, a wool sweater, and cream knee-high socks. It represents my culture by showing my family tartan. The tartan is associated with countries such as Scotland and Ireland. A "clan tartan" is a part of any Scottish clan. All Scottish clans have several tartans attributed to their name. Scottish kilts almost always have tartan patterns. Tartan is called plaid in North America, but in Scotland, a plaid is a tartan cloth slung over the shoulder as a kilt accessory, or a plain ordinary blanket such as one would have on a bed. This object is important to my family because it is everywhere. It is seen throughout my home in blankets, mugs, and is even framed. It represents our family and how it traces back to the early 1000s. It is seen throughout my home in blankets, mugs, and is even framed.
