Thistle
Like many West Virginians, my family heritage is that of Scottish, Irish, and English. Many came because West Virginia’s terrain is similar to Scotland’s. Immigrants could begin mining, timbering, or sheep farming upon arrival. My mother always says there’s no need to go to Scotland because Pocahontas County in West Virginia looks just like it.
When I was growing up I remember a coat of arms hanging on my grandparents’ wall and on it was a Thistle. They explained to me that Thistle is the official flower of Scotland. My family has always grown Thistle as an homage to our heritage as well as a way to attract bees and butterflies.
My mom had travelled to Scotland and was kicking herself for not buying a Thistle charm. My grandfather owned a jewelry store and shortly after his death my mom found a Thistle charm sitting on his desk blotter. Thistle holds a special place in our hearts.
