The Poncho
This is a Poncho. It is one piece of cloth that we usually wear in cool weather. This typical piece of cloth is made by artisanal people, some knitting handmade others sew. A long time ago my mother came from Ecuador to New York City to visit me and she brought me a Poncho. I was feeling connected with my culture and my mom because this is part of Ecuadorian heritage.
Ecuador has two kinds of weather, hot, which is the section we call The Coast. It has beautiful beaches, exquisite food and large cities. One of these is Guayaquil, the city where I was born. The other section we call The Sierra has cold weather, most of the people made folklore clothes like ponchos, scarfs, gloves, shoes, jackets and a variety of art and craft too. I have good memories of my childhood, especially when we were traveling to The Sierra, because this is the place where I wear the Poncho. Here I wore it in the autumn season. I still remember the nice time when I was traveling with my mom and my family.
My mother passed away three years ago, but I feel like it was yesterday. When I wore the poncho I felt a special connection with my mom. It was like my mom embraced me. I am very grateful to my mom for passing down her culture. I hope that my children will continue to pass it down to my future generation.
