The Crow Above the Stairs
In my grandparents house there's a dark feathered figure over the stairs. He flies on a thin, clear string and always sparked my curiosity. Of course I was four. It was a cherished memory when I was young. I lived in that house till I was five years old and I think that must be the only thing I remember vividly. Looking up with my cousin who was nearly a year older than me while we ran up the stairs as fast as we could to get to the dress up bin. She would squeal “I'm gonna beat you!” I can still hear her voice whenever I put my ear to a seashell. It reminds me of my grammie whose goal in life was to see as many birds as she possibly could. Even the flowers in her back garden in sunny California were birds of paradise, quite a fitting title. Sometimes I remember her when I see a cardinal. Recently I found out that the crow fell on the stairs and is broken. It will be fixed. I know it will because we always get back up. I think the crow represents my family's creativity. It's a symbol of a shared wisdom from people I look up to. It shows how we all at some point have looked up and dreamed of flying just like that black crow.
