The Beaded Necklace
Have you ever loved something so much that you wear it every single day? I definitely have and I am still am. The object that is so dear to me is a necklace that my grandmother purchased for me from the beautiful island of Trinidad and Tobago. My grandmother raised my mother on this small island. My mom soon came to America when she reached the age of nineteen. So as I have noted, my mom’s culture and family all come from this island in the caribbean. So when my grandma gifted me with this item I was absolutely stunned by it’s beauty. The necklace reminded me of the natural beauty that the island has to offer. Each bead is detailed and seems to have it’s own personality. I have visited Trinidad on many occasions and each time I visit it’s like i’m seeing it all over again for the first time. I remember seeing a necklace very similar to the one that my grandma purchased for me; and I just remember falling in love with it! So a year later when my grandma came back to her home in Queens, after visiting her homeland, she gave me the necklace. I now wear this necklace almost everyday because I feel like it’s a part of my mom’s culture and that her home is with me. There is also a meaning to each of the beads. For example, one bead means luck, another happiness...etc. I hope that maybe one day, I can give my grandma something that makes her feel the way the way that I do about this beautiful necklace.
