The Alice Ring

We have a ring in our family that has been unintentionally passed down through four generations of Alices (or some form of the name Alice). The ring originally belonged to Alice Josephine, who was born in 1886 and emigrated from Ireland in the late 1800s to settle in Narragansett, Rhode Island. There, she worked as a maid at The Greene Inn and met her husband, Patrick Joseph. This is where the ring comes into the story—it was her engagement ring.
Alice and Patrick had two children, Joseph and Rose Albina. Rose Albina married William and gave birth to Alice Irene. Alice Irene was named after both of her grandmothers. Alice Josephine eventually passed her ring on to Alice Irene.
Alice Irene got married and gave birth to Joanne Marie Alicia. Joanne chose “Alicia” as her confirmation name because it is a form of Alice. Alice Irene passed the ring on to Joanne when she was a young adult because she remembered her great-grandmother, Alice Josephine.
Joanne then got married, and they named their youngest daughter Alicia. She is named after both of her grandmothers. Joanne passed the ring on to Alicia after she traveled to Ireland in 2022.
While discussing the ring’s history, Joanne and Alicia realized that the ring had been passed down through four generations of Alices. From Alice Josephine, to Alice Irene, to Joanne Marie Alicia, to Alicia.
Today, Alicia wears her great-great-grandmother’s ring on a regular basis, and it reminds her of all the wonderful, strong women who wore it before her.
