Generations of Clothing
My objects are a photo of me and my grandmother wearing traditional Norwegian dresses, and a photo of my mother and my great-grandmother wearing them.
My great-grandmother made the skirts, aprons and vests all by herself, in 1986. Her parents immigrated here from Norway. The outfits are really special because of that.
The skirts and aprons are just made out of fabric, like most things, but the vests have very intricate beaded designs. I can’t imagine how long it takes to do that.
The outfits represent where my family is from, and for that reason, they’re important to us. Still, I’d love to know when they would wear these dresses. They’re so nice. What were they used for?
It is so important to me to have these traditional pieces of clothing in my family.
