This is an advertisement for a Tea Company my Great Great Grandfather owned in Chicago. He was an Irish immigrant who moved to the city and started his own business with his son. During the violent Chicago race riots of 1919 , one of the employees of the shop, an African American, was afraid of being attacked while returning home from work. Matthew Lamb and his son devised a plan to hide him among the sacks of tea they were delivering and signal him when they approached his neighborhood. They did this every day until the riots subsided and it was safe for him to return home on his own.
