Photo of my grandfather
Attached is a photo of my grandfather who was a second generation immigrant. His father came from Russia and his mother from Romania. My grandfather was born in Brooklyn in the 1920s and grew up during the Depression. His family was very poor, and he joined the Navy at 17. When he got back, he put himself through college before his parents' untimely passing. After his parents' early deaths, he worked to put his sister through college and himself through law school. After law school, he hustled as a young lawyer getting whatever clients he could. One day a mentor of his told him to look at the papers on his desk and told my grandfather that once that stack was done, he needed to go find more clients. The mentor said my grandfather would always be hustling as a lawyer and advised my grandfather rather to be the client. So even though it was late in life, my grandfather got started in real estate at about 40, starting The Kraus Organization. One of the first buildings he bought was the one he grew up in. Back then, NYC was much different, and he had to have a carry permit for safety reasons as he collected rent . This business is now run by my dad and uncle.
