My grandmother immigrated from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and landed in Santa Monica, California. She had no home, or money, and felt lost due to not knowing the language. She has gone through many challenges throughout her life, although she moved away from what she called home, she kept a piece of her culture with her, and that was food. Growing up, she cooked for me and my family delicious Mexican dishes. She has said that ever since she was little, she would observe her mother in the kitchen and learn from her. The one dish that I love and has been a tradition to make in our family for as long as I can remember is Tamales.
I like to think of Tamales as presents filled with flavor. They're wrapped in corn husks with a delicious blend of masa and appetizing fillings that range from pork to roasted strips of chilies and cheese. My grandma was the first person to introduce me to what is now my favorite dish. It is currently a tradition for our family to come together for one day, dedicated to making this delicious food.  It brings our family closer to our culture and I know my grandma feels the same way. I'm aware that it is strenuous migrating to a new country, a new language, and a new world. But, my grandmother persevered. I can now learn and connect to my Mexican heritage. Traditions, like my own, connect everyone and their families closer to their culture. I believe that strengthening our identity and understanding our family's origin is crucial.
