My mother arrived in the US in 1990, to get her Ph.D from the University of Akron in Ohio on full scholarship. She told me that she waited almost a year after applying to obtain her visa due to restrictions from the Chinese government, and she took out a loan from a family friend to finance her plane ticket and lodging in the US because her family was quite poor. It's amazing to me that my parents really did achieve the American dream; they came to this country with less than $200 each, and they're now homeowners and well-off in the scientific fields. This bright red puffy coat was a luxurious purchase she made with her father in Beijing before he sent her off to the USA, and they didn't see each other for 3 years after that because their families didn't have money for plane tickets. I'm really incredibly grateful that my parents have been so lucky; they've been such hardworking parents who provided an amazing life for my brother and I.
