My great grandmother who emigrated from Puerto Rico to New York used to love cooking for her family. Her favorite holiday was thanksgiving. Everything she cooked on thanksgiving such as pernil, arroz con gandules, turkey, pasteles and several other foods, she would use sofrito as a base. Even though, my picture shows a store bought Sofrito, my great grandmother has a recipe for a home made one. She passed the recipe down to my grandmother, to my mother and eventually to me. Whenever my mother, grandmother or I cook, we use sofrito as a base.
