In the corner of our home sits a red lantern. It has golden designs on it and shines brightly. It’s not just a decoration; it is a symbol of our cultural roots. Every year, during Taiwan’s Lantern Festival, we light a similar lantern to celebrate the end of Lunar New Year. The lantern is a special part of our lives, connecting us to our culture and our ancestor.  The origin of sky lanterns in Taiwan dates back to the early 19th century. This tradition began as a signal to let refugees know that it was safe to return to their town. Over time, they became a symbol of hope and good fortune .They lit lanterns to celebrate, just like we do now. Even though they live in a different time, the lantern brings us together. It reminds me of their journey of migration from rural Taiwan to urban center and how they carried their culture with them, even when life changed.  When I see the lantern’s glow, I think about my great-grandparents who once lived in a small village in Taiwan. Life was not always easy for them. They worked hard to provide for their family , yet, they still took time to celebrate by lighting lanterns with their children. I imagine them standing outside their home, looking at the sky, watching the lanterns rise and carrying their hopes with them.
