- This document shows my Swedish heritage. It is a copy of the ship British princess manifest, listing my great-great-great-grandfather, Otto Severin Johansson, as a passenger in 1883. Otto was a young man who overcame great adversity. He lost his mother in child birth, then tragically his father and brother were drowned at sea when he was 7 months old. He was subsequently sold to a family of stone cutters on the island, Malmon where he lived in Sweden. At the age of 21, Otto decided to start a new life in America. As part of starting a new life he changed his last name to Kjellberg, later modified to Chellberg. He sailed across the Atlantic to Philadelphia then later moved to Minnesota, and later again Chicago. Shortly thereafter, he was able to send his fiancé enough money to join him in America. He established himself as a successful business man and had 2 children with his wife. Any time I struggle with problems that come into my life, I can reflect on my heritage and Otto's inspiring story of him overcoming hardship.
