Shabbat Candlesticks
My objects are two golden Shabbat candlesticks that belonged to my great-great-grandmother. We use them to light candles on the night of the Sabbath. They were extremely special to her, as they were one of the only things she was able to bring with her when she immigrated to the United States of America from Russia around 1900. Currently, these two candlesticks are being kept in my grandparents’ house. They’re also the ones who told me about these precious family heirlooms. Every time I look at them, I am reminded of how Judaism has always been a central part of my family’s identity. It amazes me how five generations later, we can still value religion just as much as our ancestors did. These Shabbat candlesticks and the Jewish religion itself have helped me connect not only to her, but also to all of my other ancestors who helped shape who I am today.
