My family celebrates Passover. This is a Seder Plate. A Seder is a ceremony to celebrate Moses freeing the jews from slavery. The Egyptian Pharaoh enslaved the jews because he was powerful and had an army. The Seder Plate has many different foods that resemble the jews being freed from enslavement with the Egyptians when Moses led the jews away from Egypt to be free. These are what some of the foods on the Seder Plate represent:
- The Bitter Herbs reminds people of the bitterness of slavery.
- The Grapefruit is on the Seder Plate because a woman asked a rabbi “when could a woman be a rabbi”, and the rabbi said, “there will be female rabbis when there is a grapefruit on the Seder Plate”.So we put a grapefruit on the Seder Plate as a symbol of equality.
- The Egg represents a symbol of life.
- The Meat Bone is to remind people of sacrifice that the jews made in order to achieve freedom.
