To me, a single Afghan banknote is exactly that—a priceless time machine connecting me to my roots, day and night. This specific bill comes from Afghanistan, featuring a historic design our people have used ever since it was first introduced back between 1925 and 1928. It stands for my country’s currency, but more than that, it represents a bygone era of our history.Right before I left my homeland, my grandmother gave it to me as a parting gift. I immediately tucked it safely under my phone case, and that fragile slip of paper became my silent companion. It journeyed with me through Pakistan and ultimately stuck by my side all the way to the new life I’m building here. For nearly six years now, it has stayed pressed right against my palm, keeping my childhood memories alive.Whenever I look at it, I’m instantly thrown back to the pure joy of walking down the street to buy everyday snacks—chips, drinks, gummies, and that warm, traditional Afghan bread.
