Saree
This is the most recent Saree (ethnic dress) my Aaji (grandmother in Marathi) has given to me. She was born and raised in India, like my father. My father immigrated to the U.S. in 2003 to attend college at USC. He met my mother and started a family, having me in 2008 and my sister in 2011. He received his U.S. citizenship in 2017. I haven't been to India yet, but my Aaji tries to visit for a few months every year. She has been making Sarees for me ever since I was 2 years old. She always makes sure the detail is perfect and personal. Every time she makes a Saree, she includes details from my life and hers during that year. The flower gems are a symbol to my achievements in school and the gold beaded trim is a reference to the gold necklace my sister and I got for her. This is always a special moment between us because it reminds me of my culture and gives me the opportunity to pass these pieces of clothing on to my kids and future generations. This is not just a piece of clothing for me but a reminder of my culture and a way to continue my Aaji's legacy.
