My stepmom’s family is from Uganda, my step-mom lived there most of her life, and my step sister lived there until she was 5, then moved to the U.S. The country that they are from plays a big part in who they are, and this influence held a strong part of my childhood. They introduced me to so many different foods, dances, and things that I otherwise would not have been introduced to. I remember the first time I met my new step-mom and step-sister, they gave me traditional Ugandan flip flops as a gift. They had colorful beads on them, and were made of real leather, and were very durable. I will always remember this moment, as I still have these flip flops, though I outgrew them. They will always be my family, and these flip-flops will always remind me of the times that we shared together.
