When my family immigrated from Ukraine to the United States, one of the few objects we brought with us was a small embroidered cloth, called a rushnyk. In Ukraine, a rushnyk is a symbol of tradition and blessing, often used in weddings and family ceremonies. For us, it became more than just a piece of fabric—it represented home, protection, and the memories of the life we left behind. We kept it in our new home in New York as a reminder of our roots, a way to carry our culture into a new country, and a sign of resilience during our journey of starting over in America.
