The person I interviewed was my mom, Dora Navarrete. She originally is from Colombia and came to New York. The object she chose was a pink jeweled rosary gifted to her by her grandmother. A rosary is a string of beads that form 5 decades of Hail Marys and in between each decade is a Holy Father prayer.  It is part of her catholic religion.
My mom came to New York September 20th of 2001 to get married with my dad. She was in a new country and didn’t know English so she was very frightened. Whenever she felt alone or scared she would always take out her rosary and start praying. It helped her have faith that god was always by her side to get her through the worst of her journey.
This rosary shows that people may sometimes feel deserted and nervous when immigrating to new countries but they still try to find a little piece of hope to cling on to. It is important to share immigrants stories because we need to demonstrate all they have gone through. In conclusion, sharing immigration stories helps feel immigrants like they aren’t alone.
