The diamonds in this ring have been passed through generations of my family since the 1910s. The ring originally belonged to my great-grandmother, Carmella Rita Bastogne. Her family came to the United States from Bari, Italy, but she was raised in Brooklyn. Since Carmella got the ring, the diamonds have stayed in the family for a century, first to my grandmother and then to my mother. It remains a common thread on that side of the family, from the journey to the United States to today.
